June 10, 2009 FBR Meeting to feature Mark Weddig, Black River Falls Assistant High School Principal

Mark Weddig, Black River Falls Assistant High School Principal, will recount his first hand experience of the Exxon Valdes oil spill clean up for the June 10th Friends of the Black River meeting. Weddig was the Director of Environmental Education at the Alaska center for Environment in Anchorage in 1988 and 1989. He was involved in the hands on effort to document, clean and rehabilitate wildlife, especially sea otters, affected by the spill. To be held at the CCU Community room in Black River Falls, the meeting is free and the public is invited.

May 13, 2009 FBR Meeting to feature Jessica Bolwahn, Coulee Region Chapter president of The Prairie Enthusiasts

5/13 Friends of the Black River’s 7 PM Wednesday evening meeting will feature Coulee Region Chapter president of The Prairie Enthusiasts Jessica Bolwahn. Also Restoration Biologist for the Mississippi Valley Conservancy, Jessica works with many community groups and individuals to identify, protect and restore prairie habitat throughout the Coulee region.

The audience will learn the history of prairies in Wisconsin, their ecology, biological diversity and extraordinary value as wildlife habitat. More than 99.8 % of original prairie and oak savanna has been lost since settlement of the region. Jessica is currently completing her masters degree program studying prairie management practices. Her focus for this photographic presentation will be the sand and bluff prairies of our region and how they contribute to the integrity of their watersheds. April 8, 2009 FBR meeting, featuring “Islands of the Black River”

Do you know who owns the islands you encounter as you paddle the Black River? Are you a river user with knowledge to share about your favorite island fishing, lunch or camping stop? Derek Strohl of the Bureau of Land Management was here to  answer questions and seek information about BLM islands on April 8th at 7PM at the Friends of the Black River monthly meeting at the BRF CCU.

February 6, 2009 FBR Meeting featuring Rick Kark and Raffle

Rick Kark, extraordinary Wisconsin waterway paddler, will highlight FBR’s Friday Feb. 6th, 7:00 PM membership meeting. Kark has been a featured presenter state wide at many watershed, paddling and conservation events. Rick will bring a program about his record 300 Wisconsin paddles. Kark notes as favorite canoe routes our own Halls, Morrison and Robinson Creeks. Also scheduled for the evening is the kayak and sporting goods raffle ticket drawing! Tickets still available, 715-896-4901!
As always, the public is invited to attend free of charge at the Black River Falls Coop Credit Union at 7:00 PM on Friday, February 6th.

March 11, 2009 FBR Meeting—Alan Stankevitz, photographer

Alan Stankevitz, Minnesota wildlife photographer will bring a program of his local bird images and his remarkable quest towards an energy neutral life. Alan’s photography has won numerous awards (both local and national) and his photographs have been published in books, periodicals, and the internet. Stankevitz and his wife, Jo, have built a cordwood home powered by renewable energy. Alan will share his spectacular photos and his passion for birds, wildlife and the environment on this unforgettable evening.


Join Friends of the Black River Wednesday, March 11 at 7:00 PM at the Coop Credit Union in Black River Falls for this outstanding program.
