Antarctica explorer to share travel adventures at the annual meeting of the Friends of the Black River, in October

A traveler to the southern tip of South America and the Antarctic continent will share his adventures at the annual meeting of the Friends of the Black River. Joe Motto, a semi-retired gastroenterologist from Eau Claire, will be the special guest of FBR at its annual meeting. The annual meeting will be held Wednesday, October 12, at 7 p.m. in the community room of the Co-op Credit Union.

Motto and his wife enjoy exploring many interesting areas of the globe and attempting to capture wildlife images in the process. In January 2008, the couple, along with about 70 other photographers, went on a four week adventure to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica aboard the Ushuia, a small research vessel.

During the voyage, they encountered the rough seas, rain, snow, wind and cold normal for the far southern ocean. Despite having half their photographic equipment stolen along with the many hours they flew to reach Ushuia, Argentina, they returned with images of penguins, seals, seabirds, icebergs and amazing scenes rarely seen by U.S. citizens. The Mottos are prepared to share their photographs with FBR’s members and guests. The public is encouraged to attend the special presentation.

In addition to the travelogue, a short business meeting will be held with elections of officers for the next term. Refreshments will be served.
