Paddling the Upper Mississippi — Reggie McLeod
The Black River empties into the largest river on our continent just a few miles from Jackson County. Learn more about the Mississippi River on May 12 at 7:00 PM at the Friends of the Black River’s May meeting held in the Black River Falls CCU Communityroom .
Reggie McLeod, editor and publisher of Big River Magazine is a veteran paddler and fisherman of the Mississippi’s channels and backwaters. He’ll explain how the river works, including locks and dams, levees and the government agencies that share responsibilities on the river. He’ll share some of the most pristine places and talk about some of the dangers — high water, poison ivy, tow boats, wing dams — and how to avoid them. Reggie will bring river maps and magazines to share with the audience and welcomes questions about the river, its people, its special places and unique history.

Did you realize that the Upper Mississippi is a great river to paddle, whether you want to explore quiet backwaters for an afternoon or take a river odyssey? Did you know that hundreds of miles of the river is a national wildlife refuge and open to camping without fees or registration?
Reggie will talk about planning your trip, getting to a good spot and safely enjoying the river when you get there. He’ll share some of the most pristine places and talk about some of the dangers — high water, poison ivy, tow boats, wing dams — and how to avoid them.

Reggie McLeod has lived on or near the river since the mid 1970s and frequently fishes and explores the channels and backwaters in his solo canoe. He has paddled the river through the heart of the Twin Cities as well as some of the most remote backwaters.
Reggie has written about the Upper Mississippi for many publications and served as editor and publisher of Big River Magazine since the first issue, in January 1993. Big River covers more than 400 miles of the Mississippi, from the Twin Cities to the Quad Cities. To the best of our knowledge, Big River is the only independent magazine about a river in the world.
He will bring river maps and magazines to share with the audience and welcomes questions about the river, its people, its special places and unique history.
Join Friends of the Black River for this great opportunity to learn about this longest North American River in our own back yard. Meet on Wednesday, May 12 at 7:00 PM in the Coop Credit Union Community Room, Black River Falls.
