Friends of the Black River Christmas Event to Feature Acclaimed Caribou Film

Monday evening, December 8, Friends of the Black river held their annual Christmas party at the Falls Cinema Theater. Registration and social hour began at 6:00 PM with film at 7:00 PM. The $10 (under age 12, $7) admission inckluded pizza, popcorn and beverage as well as a full screen viewing of the award winning film "Being Caribou".

From April 8th to September 8th, 2003, filmmaker Leanne Allison and wildlife biologist Karsten Heuer traveled with the Porcupine Caribou Herd, on an epic 1500 km journey to their calving grounds in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge. For 27,000 years this narrow and irreplaceable ribbon of land has provided a perfect balance of abundant food and protection from predators and an ideal place for the endangered herd to calve. The expedition was an urgent quest to understand one of North America’s last great mammal migrations. With stunning close-ups of the 123,000 animal migration, the film gives an intimate look at the video diaries of these two young naturalists. They encounter deep snow, icy rivers, clouds of insects, fridged temperatures, grizzly bears, wolves and Golden eagles, witnessing the daily struggles leading to birth and death in the herd. "Being Caribou" was the name of the expedition. Now it is also the name of this funny, informative, compelling and award-winning film. "Being Caribou" has won film festival awards across Canada, and broadcast on the CBS program, "the Nature of Things", on The Documentary Channel and LinkTV.

Also available at this event were the Friends of the Black River fund-raiser raffle tickets. Winning tickets were drawn in February and the lucky ticket holders recieced a kayak, sporting goods coupons or cash awards.
