July 14 Grassland tour with Friends of the Black River
On Wednesday, July 14th the Friends of the Black River will host a tour of the Bauer Brockway Barrens Area located just WEST of the Lake Wazee County Park. This area is considered a special natural area featuring a large variety of native plants that represent vegetation that was present at the time of European settlement. This area features lupine on which the endangered Karner Blue Butterfly is dependent in it's life cycle. Other native grasses and forbs are also present. It is possible that Karner Blues may be viewed at this time of the year. Jim Zahasky, head of the Jackson County Forest Department will discuss the history of the site and present management for native species. Assisting on the tour will be Steve Humphrey, a local authority in the identification of native species.
The tour will begin at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, July 14th near the intersection of West Bauer and Brockway Roads on the east side of Lake Wazee Recreation Area. For further information contact Steve Rake at 715 284-2087.
Join us for supper with our guest trip leaders at Rozario's Pizza, N 1st Street at 4:45, if you wish before the field trip.
